August 2007:

The Hope Funds for Cancer Research Inaugural Awards Dinner and Dance will be held August 25th at the Bois Dore´ Mansion in Newport, Rhode Island. The Hope Funds for Cancer Research is a newly formed non profit organization established by a group of dedicated volunteers concerned about the lack of progress in harder-to-treat cancers.   Their research grants encourage investigation of innovative cancer treatment and detection for the most difficult-to-treat and understudied cancers.

GENERAL RESEARCH AND PATIENT FOCUS:
 
May 2007- Clinical Oncology in Croatia: Strategic Planning and Beyond
TRAC is lending its help to assist the researchers, government, and advocacy groups in establishing improved standards, programs, and efforts for cancer patients in Croatia. TRAC also hosted with Medora Global, an inaugural Croatian Patient Advocacy Workshop with representatives from patient advocacy organizations throughout Croatia. 
 
The Overall Meeting objectives: The aim of this two day workshop involved leading, world-renowned experts from the U.S., EU countries and Croatia to determine opportunities and strategies for improving treatment of cancer in Croatia. The intention was to establish a scientific event that will provide recommendations and a platform for future Croatian strategies against cancer. The Croatian example will serve as a model that will be applicable to transitional countries of Central and Southeast Europe and worldwide, to combat cancer.

TRAC is working with the UPCI and UPMC Cancer Centers Council and Leadership in the development of Council strategic planning and program activities.  The UPCI Council includes many of Pittsburgh's most prominent leaders and members of the community working in concert with the Senior Leadership of the UPCI and UPMC Cancer Centers.

  • Breast Cancer:
American College of Surgeons-Commission on Cancer: National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC)

Paula Kim serves as a Member-At-Large on the Committee and is Chair of the Access and Utilization (AUC) Sub-Committee. Convened in 2006, the NAPBC is a consortium of national professional organizations dedicated to the improvement of the quality of care and monitoring outcomes for patients with diseases of the breast.
ACTION ITEM UPDATE:  The AUC Subcommittee will be convening later this summer with representatives from community health professionals, advocacy organizations, and the private sector.  Please contact us on this website if you are interested in learning more about the committee activities
 
  • GI Cancers:
The Pancreatic Cancer Panel is Chaired by Dr. Margaret Tempero of UC San Francisco.
Paula Kim serves as a member of this panel.
 
ACTION ITEM UPDATE:  The NCCN Pancreatic Guidelines Panel convenes July 2008 for the annual review.  You are encouraged to share your ideas, comments, and suggestions with Paula Kim or any other members of the panel. A link to the guidelines is in the Library section of this site.
 
NCI GI Steering Committee (GISC)
The GISC operates within the program of the National Cancer Institute Center for Clinical Trials
Paula Kim is a member of the NCI Gastrointestinal Cancer Steering Committee (GISC) that works to address, design, and prioritize phase 3 NCI trials.
 
NCI Pancreas Cancer Task Force
The task force works in conjunction with the GI Steering Committee and is focused on pancreas specific trials.  Dr. Jordan Berlin of Vanderbilt University is the Chair of this task force.  Paula Kim is a member of the Pancreas Task Force.
ACTION ITEM UPDATE: The NCI and the Pancreas Cancer Task Force Committee are planning a State of the Science Meeting for later this year.  If you are interested in more information contact Paula Kim.
  
 

Melanoma:

The National Melanoma Alliance established in 2007 for unity in prevention, early detection, and research focused on melanoma.

Sunday: July 1st, 2007 The Group Room National Cancer Talk Show hosted by cancer survivor Selma Schimmel will be discussing melanoma and other skin cancers.  Paula Kim was a guest on the show with Selma Schimmel and highlighted the launch of the newly formed National Melanoma Alliance. 
 

BIOSPECIMENS:
Paula Kim has been focused in developing best practices, guidelines, and resources for biospecimens over the past five years.  Here are links to some programs and areas specific to biospecimen issues.
